Psychological Reasons why Good People Commit Crime
The seemingly professional crime that contributes to the collapse of companies is usually brought about by minor violations of ethics that result to a bigger issue. The reasons why smart people are motivated to committing fraud is mesmerizing, a subject that Dr. Muel Kaptein discusses in his book. This paper puts down some of the author's significant insights on the reasons and behavioral partialities that throw in the wrong doings by the said smart and talented people.
The tunnel vision is one of the reasons. It is important to set goals and to achieve them. However, proactive focus on the goals can blind many individuals to moral concerns. For instance, when employees are offered with large bonuses by their employer for bringing to high sales, they focus so much on accomplishing the said goal to the extent of forgetting that they were supposed to make that target profitable. That may contribute to a decision that will leave employees jobless.
Another reason is the Galatea effect. In other words, the self-image of a person contributes to his or her behavior. Individuals with the well-built sense of them are not likely to commit immoral behavior (Stephen, 2009). In contrary, employees who look at themselves as the pace setters are in most cases likely to go against the rules, feeling less responsible for their mistakes being the reason.
Accepting to have stolen unnoticeable goods is another psychological reason outlined by Kaptein. In any workplace, there is a dozen of temptations to cheat. Such things as toilet papers and stationary are carried along with employees to their homes. Most of these small thefts end up being ignored.
