In his book, the first steps in the clinical practice of psychotherapy: a practice oriented psychodynamic approach; one can clearly justify that it is a comprehensible and practical work of the clinical science world. It’s a book for the entire therapy practitioners out there. It’s clear that Matt Ott had the new psychotherapist in practice in mind while writing this book. He clearly discusses what is involved in psychodynamic oriented psychotherapy and how the clinicians can benefit from this knowledge (Matt, 2001). From chapter four, there is a clear educational structure on how to help one in developing and using the professional self understanding in the world of clinical practice. The book has done a great work of offering sound recommendations involving the methods of dynamic therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy it does not stop there but illustrate on how it can be applied in their daily field of practice. Matt has also put some suggestions on how to increase the effectiveness of the psychotherapist who are involved in the administration and collaboration with fellow therapists (Matt, 2001). Through this he has done a great work of addressing how therapist can improve their clinical skills.
Overview of Clinical Practice in Psychotherapy
Matt makes it clear in the book that psychotherapy is a formal relationship between a qualified professional and a client. A client can be a group or an individual. The therapist or clinician has to employ a set of measures that will create a therapeutic alliance with his patients, which will push for new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving (Matt, 2001). Matt shows us that clinicians can employ various interventions skills learned from training like, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and use of psychoanalyst to form and better their interactions the clients (Matt, 2001). It’s the work of a clinician psychologist to base their work on research and trained clinical judgment since it all ends up with the therapeutic orientation been based as insight versus action and in-session versus out-session approaches (Matt, 2001).
Insight orientation is known as psychodynamic therapy. This is the procedure of understanding the inspiration underlined in ones thoughts and feelings.
