Daniel Pink’s “Drive” book review
Daniel H. Pink is the author of the book “Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us”. He was born in July 23rd, 1964 in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Bexley High School in 1982. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of North-western University. He has a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Yale Law & policy Review. He has worked in the field of politics and the field of economic policy. These experiences led him to writing the book “Drive” that was published 10years ago.
The book focuses on the gap that exists between how motivation is dealt with in the work place and the results of social science research that actually proves that they are wrong. Pink in his book is trying to show us that we have been approaching the subject of motivation the wrong way. The reason we are wrong is because we assume that all task are done the same way. According to Pink some tasks are algorithmic because they do the same thing over and over in a certain way CITATION Dan09 \l 2057 (Pink). Others are heuristic because you have to come up with something new every time. Essentially to understand motivation you need to look at the task. Daniel Pink in the book he portrays that extrinsic motivations like high pay only work for the algorithmic tasks.
What interested me the most in the book is that the author proved that high performance is not because of biological drive nor reward and punishment drive. The true drive is the deep seated desire in us that wants us to be in charge of the direction our lives take, expand our abilities and to live a life of purpose. He particularly described the three forms of intrinsic motivation. That include; autonomy, which is the desire to direct our lives. Mastery, which is the deep urge to get better every day at what we do. And purpose, which is the need to work with something greater than ourselves.
You can see from the above framework that Daniel Pink through his has basically rendered the usual way we manage our business to be wrong. This is due to the fact that most organizations today, are micro managing their workers to the core. They are not challenging their employees’ creativity and neither are they giving them purpose. The organizations that have gotten this secret are doing well. Pink says in his book that when you are rewarding your workers with money, in time they get satisfied with money and they are not motivated any more.
