Overview
Exports and imports are important aspects in a country’s economy. The United States of America engages in the export and import business and has done this for decades. The country has benefited from exports and imports in a variety of ways including earning profits, creating employment and improving the welfare of its citizens. For exports and imports to occur successfully, a country must have positive relations with foreign partners, an aspect that is covered within state foreign policies.
The US is ranked as one of the world’s leading exporters after China and the European Union (EU). The US is also among the leading importers in the world after the EU. According to Amadeo (2019), “In 2018, total U.S. trade with foreign countries was $5.6 trillion. That was $2.5 trillion in exports and $3.1 trillion in imports of both goods and services”. As of 2018, 67 percent of exports were made up of goods being $1.7 trillion of total exports while services were made up of $828 billion of total exports. The largest percentage (80) of imports was made up of goods as of 2018. Goods were made up of $2.6 trillion of total exports while services were made up of $558 billion (18 percent) of total imports (Amadeo, 2010). As of 2018, US exports were made up of goods that include capital goods ($693 billion), industrial supplies ($576 billion), consumer goods ($648 billion), automobiles ($372 billion) and foods, feeds and beverages ($147 billion) (Amadeo, 2010). With these figures, it is evident that exports and imports make an important part of the United States business and economic policies and actions. As population increases and politics and economy become dynamic, such figures are bound to change
