Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
Functional behavior assessment assists individualized educational plan (IEP) teams to figure out the reasons behind a child’s unique ways of acting. The major steps involved in the FBA process include the definition of the behavior, gathering and analysis of the information, finding out the reason for the behavior, and finally making a plan for the child. In the case of Angel, the FBA must consider a number of factors involved in the trends of behavior. In angel’s case, targeted behaviors include getting out of the seat to sharpen the pencil, picking items from other students, and making disruptive comments to peers and adults.
In a span of two days (17th October to 18th October), Angel had engaged in the first behavior of being out of the seat to sharpen his pencil three times. He picked items including Gina’s critique form and Mario’s homework at least three times.
