Abstract
This case study consists of an 8 year old in third grade, Jeffrey Alfaro, that has done very well for the past two years. He has only lived in the United States for three years. The case study includes two interviews that demonstrate the progress he has made throughout his couple of years in HISD. It also consists of family’s background and education. In this study I will use the TELPAS Descriptors to assess and place him at the right level.
Life of an ELL
There are many obstacles students encounter when they come from other countries. This is the case for many when they are brought young, refugees and immigrants, to live the American dream or leave their home due to violence. When they come to the United States, they are lost and have to find ways to survive (sink or swim). They have to learn a new language, they have to be able to fit in with their peers, while maintaining their own cultural values, and struggle to make it. As they are settled in their new world they need to be supported to achieve success. They first need to go through the process of the conceptual model. There are four components included in this model, which are sociocultural, linguistic, academic, and cognitive. Even though parents may not speak the language, they also need to be supportive so their children continue to learn a new language and maintain their first language. Also it is important to differentiate between an ELL and the native English learners that have learning disability as the two groups would have different instruction program, that is because the former has two parallel tasks, learning the English language and maintaining his academic curriculums. It is also important to combine both, the content and the language, in the main curriculums as it is critically helping in achieving both the academic standards and the language learning process. Achieving the most of the learning process requires teaching students the ability to self learning and independent by practicing different activities with peers or home activities, this would help successfully speeding up the learning process.
