Hematology refers to a branch of medicine which involves the study and treatment of blood. Hematology also involves the study of diseases of the blood and even the diseases that affect the blood-forming organs. Anemia is under hematology because it is the condition whereby the blood does not have adequate and healthful red blood cells.
A laboratory test should be conducted to patients suspected to have anemia. Some common signs and symptoms of anemia include pallor, weakness, general fatigue and dyspnea on exertion. A doctor should run complete blood count test(CBC) test in determining whether a patient has anemia(Clark, 2012).CBC enables the doctor to know the number of red blood cells in a sample of the patient’s blood hence being able to determine the levels of red blood cells and hemoglobin in the patient’s blood. Similarly, a test to examine the size, as well as the shape of the patient’s blood cells, should be carried out. Unusual color, size, and shape of red blood cells may be a sign of anemia.
