Content:
1 How the trauma scenario affects Florida trauma patients in terms of quality
Advantages
* More for-profit medical institutions mean that more specialists will be retained in the Florida state area that will mean better quality for Florida trauma patients.
* More trauma care centers also means that more trauma victims will have a better higher survival rate, 25 percent, from car accidents, gun violence or other life-threatening trauma injuries compared to hospitals without designated trauma services (Asensio, Juan, and Trunkey 41).
Disadvantages
* A majority of the new trauma centers are low-level centers (level three, four and five) meaning that any increase in quality is only slight in the real sense since such centers only work to stabilize the condition of patients and transfer them to high-level centers (two and one).
* Lower quality because of the division of trauma volume among many centers that will result in lower quality since research indicates that only trauma centers and medical specialists who treat a large number of patients have better outcomes. Thus too many centers worsen outcomes.
2 How the trauma scenario affects Florida Trauma patients in terms of access and costs
Advantages
* New regulations have improved access by allowing more trauma centers to be built cutting distance from the area of injury to hospitals from 30 minutes to 20 minutes or from 50 miles to 15 miles.
* More state designated trauma centers also mean that more patients have better access to hospitals that are better prepared to handle serious injuries.
3 How the trauma scenario affects Florida Trauma patients in terms of cost
Advantages
* There is a slight reduction in treatment costs because of the payment of trauma alerta fees by schemes such as Medicare. These fees not only reduce costs but also help hospitals be prepared.
Disadvantages
* Too many trauma centers mean more costs as hospitals strive to cover specialists fees and high technology instruments costs.
* The new for-profit trauma centers are more expensive since they cannot utilize trauma alerta charge. Such hospitals, charging higher fees, means that insurers will pass on the cost in terms of higher premiums ("Magill's medical guide" 1338).
* Some non-profit trauma centers are partly funded by taxpayers so that they can care for the uninsured. Thus, more trauma centers mean that taxpayers will have to pay more to help such institutions.
4 Conclusion
The trauma scenario in Florida has experienced huge changes in the last one decade. The number of trauma centers has increased, from the few initial non-profit trauma centers to dozens of trauma centers, the majority of which have been built by for-profit groups. Existing hea...
