1 Background

Singapore has a nominal GDP of $ 525.228 billion as of 2024 and it is expected to grow by 3% (Ministry of Trade and Industry Singapore, 2024). Notably, the Singaporean economy is ranked 32nd in the world yet it has a population of less than 6 million (World Bank, 2019). The country has maintained its status as a global and regional hub owing to its strong property protections, reasonable tax rates, and anti-corruption measures (The Heritage Foundation, 2023). Notably, the World Bank ranked Singapore as the global leader in the development of human capital (World Bank, 2019).
2 Industry Overview
According to the Singapore Department of Statistics (2024), the food and beverage industry in the country is experiencing a slight contraction. Specifically, it declined by 2.3% in the last year from an earlier annual expansion of 0.9%. According to the report, the poor performance in the industry is because of a fall in the sales quantities of companies operating in fast food, food courts, restaurants, and other eating destinations. By contrast, food catering companies experienced an increase in sales volume however, the industry was overshadowed by the decline in the earlier-mentioned sectors of the industry. Despite the declining sales volume, Singapore has one of the strongest consumers in the region and it presents an opportunity for Compass Group PLC to enter the market. Even though the sales volume is declining every year, the size of the market is prospected to grow by at least 4.51%(Statista Market Insights, 2024). 3 Consumer Behavior and Market Trends
The busy lifestyle of Singapore has led to a surge in demand for ready catering solutions (Henderson, 2016). Consumers are increasingly becoming focused on health and well-being in their food choices (Uttama, 2021). Despite the concern for sustainability in food in terms of health and wellness, consumers in Singapore also value convenience which is evident from the prevalence of fast food chains in Singapore (Whitton et al., 2013). The diverse population in Singapore presents an opportunity for international MNCs to enter and benefit from the market. Customers are also becoming more interested in food prepared from organic ingredients (Uttama, 2021). Notably, there is a high digitization in the offering of food services- for instance, a large percentage of the food and beverage industry is done through online ordering (Mariya Tsyganova et al., 2020).
4 Regulatory Environment
While the food and beverage industry is transparent, Singapore has one of the most stringent regulatory environments as far as food safety is concerned. The Singapore Food Agency(SFA) governs the regulatory environment and enforces very high standards of quality and safety. The underlying regulation is the Sale of Food Act which details the licensing requirements along with compliance with hygiene and safety standards. The aforementioned measures enhance the competitiveness of the Singaporean food industry.
5 Competitive Landscape
The food and beverage industry in Singapore is faced with steep competition from location and international players. The companies offer a wide range of food and catering services. Despite the stiff competition, the experience and global standing of Compass Group PLC will assist the company in establishing a competitive edge. One of the approaches the company can deploy involves enhancing digitization, health, and wellness in the product offerings. Further, the company can increase its standing by aligning itself to the goal of using at least 30% locally sourced ingredients for its food products.
6 Challenges and Opportunities
The main challenges that Compass Group PLC is likely to face when entering the market include competition from established players and strict regulations that may increase the cost of doing business. Another factor is the labor regulations. Another challenge is linked to the local culture and consumer preferences of Singapore which Compass Group PLC has little experience with. Despite the myriad of challenges, there are numerous opportunities. For instance, demand for food services particularly in the catering sector is growing. The market is also well developed in Singapore thus it is not difficult for new entrants to attract customers.
