HEREDITARY HEMOCHROMATOSIS (HH)
Part One:
Epidemiology
About 90% among Australians from HFE C282Y homozygosity. Clinically, the disease is seen as less common in females due to increased iron demand for metabolism and blood loss through their regular menstrual cycles and from pregnancy CITATION Mar13 \l 1033 (Delatycki, 2013). The disorder has a prevalence of between 1 in 150 and 1 in 200 among the northern European ancestry CITATION Bar16 \l 1033 (Graaff, 2016). Medicare results predicted that the susceptibility of hereditary hemochromatosis had increased from 14,414 in the year 1999 to about 30,000 in the year 2002. About 1 in 200 Australians have been predicted to have copies of the C282Y homozygous gene mutations to date. The disease has a 60% morbidity rate, but the likelihood that an individual will develop more severe complications is not known CITATION Dor03 \l 1033 (Gertig, 2003). The poor prognosis of the condition is as a result of early diagnosis and treatment where only a few thousands hundred cases are documented annually CITATION Mar13 \l 1033 (Delatycki, 2013)
Age plays a major role in the natural history of hereditary hemochromatosis. Early manifestations of the condition begin to show in the third stage of an individual's life and are more severe in individuals in their sixth stage of life. One-third of men develop abnormal genes, whereas only one in every a hundred women develops the condition. Most peoples may remain asymptomatic throughout their life CITATION Mar13 \l 1033 (Delatycki, 2013). Men are screened from the age of thirty years, whereas women are tested from the age of 45 years. Delayed onset of symptoms in women is as a result of increased metabolic demand, loss of blood from their regular menstruation and pregnancy.
