Donna Price assesses the way coaching skills can be utilized to bring about a good performance appraisal for both the supervisor and the employee and how to maintain good performance throughout the working period. As business student, and an aspiring business owner, I find Donna’s article very helpful in countering some popular managerial beliefs that the annual performance appraisal is an end in and of itself. As such, Donna illustrates how this process is a means to an end. Performance appraisal makes just one part (final part) of the performance management continuum and is preceded by performance planning (setting reasonable goals and standards) and coaching and counseling (providing vital feedback, guidance and help to improve employee performance). I would thus strongly recommend this article to managers faced with the daunting task of assessing employee performance and formulating future organizational goals and progressive plans. Effective managers should dispense tasks that will ensure organizational goals are efficiently and effectively realized. This hinges on individual performance in regards to organizational outcomes. Donna expounds on this by portraying that an effective manager is a partner and coach with a commitment to his/her employee’s success.
