Disparities exist in the manner in which activities are conducted in schools located in the two regions. According to Race et al.(2017), active school travel for students plays a significant role in enhancing their physical activity levels. The authors applied qualitative methods to conduct a study to assess school travel experiences for students from urban and suburban schools. The findings indicate that students from suburban schools face challenges in school travel since they come from an area with disconnected family homes with a high population of immigrants. From the study active school travel varies for students from urban and suburban schools as a result of their neighborhood and family background. Urban and suburban schools have several differences characterized by the environment, management, and economic power. This causes a major gap in the resources available for students from their respective schools. One of the major differences in access to resources exists in high school athletes. Those who attend urban schools often have access to fewer resources such as protective equipment and medical personnel compared to those from suburban schools. This causes a significant gap in concussion knowledge and reporting among athletes from urban and suburban schools (Wallace et al., 2017). In most cases urban schools serve communities with a high population of low-income earners thus most students live in poverty. Many students in urban schools qualify for free and reduced lunch. Therefore the health and wellbeing of athletes from urban schools are poor compared to that of those from suburban schools. Another significant difference between urban and suburban schools exists in the enrolment of students. Urban schools often record larger enrolments in both elementary and secondary levels. Therefore it is more likely that urban schools are often concentrated with students than suburban schools. Also, there exists a gap in access to teacher resources whereby those from urban schools are limited in access and also do not have control of curriculum (Lippman, 1996). The level of teacher experience and salary in urban and suburban schools is comparable. However, school administrators from urban schools experience difficulty while seeking to hire new teachers. Also, urban schools face student behavior problems more compared to those from suburban regions. In the past urban education system was popular for promoting racial segregation with the whites having the perception that other people were inferior. This was a major contributor to the disparities that existed in access to education. In contrast, suburban schools attracted families from a particular community with most of them having high scholastic standards and socially responsible (Rury, 2020). This made suburban schools be considered economically superior. Many people have the perception that urban schools are corrupt thus inefficient in the delivery of education to students. According to Schneider (2017) urban schools have not been effective in the delivery of education to students in the institutions. This has made many parents often high-income earners to consider changing their children from urban schools. Such parents opt for suburban schools which are more likely to enhance the quality of education received by students. This acts as a challenge since there is a cut down on resources available for education. In most cases, urban schools host students from poor backgrounds, racial minorities, and those learning English to enhance their proficiency. In most cases, students from urban schools often face challenges in learning such as a poor learning environment and overcrowded classes. In contrast, students from suburban schools are exposed to better learning environments with well-maintained institutions and are also equipped with technology. Due to the challenges experienced in urban schools, there is a high record of dropouts as compared to those from suburban regions (Irizarry, 2015). Also, suburban schools often benefit more from state aid thus are more developed to promote a good learning environment. There also exists a disparity between students since those from urban regions are not exposed to life skills as is the case for those from suburban schools. Therefore there is a significant gap in people in a community since those from suburban schools are more likely to be qualified and socially responsible. Therefore there exists a need for a balance in resources available for schools in both urban and suburban regions to enhance the likelihood of academic success for all students.
