A domain is a specific area of specialization, in CYC ‘domains of practice’ refers to the areas where a CYC practitioner possesses knowledge and high skills. If one wants to be a CYC practitioner, it is important to have a strong background review on the seven domains of practice. These domains include the following; The self, Professionalism, Communication, Relationships, Critically Applied Human Development, The context, and Interventions.
The self
The self can be defined as one’s character traits and perception of the societal norms. The self is the psychological, emotional, social, physical, spiritual components that make up a person. When trying to identify ‘The self’, one must understand the eight categories that are used to identify the self. These include;
Physical self- includes appearance, involvement in athletics, and sense of comfort in body and disability status.
Social self- better described as relationship with friends, school and social group membership and involvement, social aspirations and popularity.
Sexual self- this includes sexual orientation, sexual values, sexual feelings, sexual desires and experiences.
Familial self- this the role within the individuals in the family, that is, son/daughter, sister/brother, mother/father, niece/nephew, grandmother/grandfather.
Creative self- these are the talents and interests, creative aspirations, involvement in hobbies and activities.
Community self- involves the benefits of someone to the community, such as employment activist experience, volunteer experience and aspirations, and group or club membership.
Academic self- student’s achievement, educational goals and desires, career development, and the involvement in school and social groups.
The cultural self- this is the ethnic, racial, spiritual, religious, geographic socioeconomic identity of a person.
These eight categories when combined they all make up ‘The self’, which is the identity of a person. It is very important for one to take care of the self by practicing self-care by reflecting on one’s feelings, thoughts, actions, maintaining healthy stress levels, getting enough sleep and eating healthy.
Professionalism
Professionalism is the practice of handling scenarios in a professional manner and also maintaining professional relationship among the youths, their families, community and other members within the profession. Professionalism must be applied on all aspects of CYC that is in, education, organizations, supervision, ethics and diversity. It is important for a CYC to apply professionalism during their entire career no matter who they are working with.
Communication
Communication is among the major domains in CYC. Communication builds trust, it can be exchanged in various ways which include; verbal, asking questions, paraphrasing and showing a sense of empathy. Communication may also involve, repeating what someone has said, non-verbal cues which are the physical reactions during communication.
Relationship
Building relationships is among the important aspects of one’s life. Relationship involves engagement, care, teamwork and professional relationships. CYC practitioners should have a unique approach on how to develop a relationship with youths through encouraging them and positively influencing them.
Critically Applied Human Development
This domain purely deals with the understanding of the development theories among the youths and how development patterns influence the growth of the youth. This domain is evolving constantly and the focus is on the development of young people.
The system context
This domain can better be described as concepts that are related to theories and the explanation to how these concepts can be utilized to understand the youth and families. This domain helps a CYC practitioner to understand the influences on development in children and the youth.
Interventions
Intervention is the last and final domain which involves intervening to influence a situation, conflict or outcome. Interventions has subdomains with different theories that help a CYC practitioner to increase their knowledge and skills in dealing with children and the youth. The intervention subdomains include; planned intervention, assessment, advocacy and group work
In conclusion, becoming a professional CYC one must have prior knowledge to all these domains of practice and master the specific time each domain should be put into practice.
