Formative assessments are continuous assessments carried out during a unit or lesson. They can inform teachers how to approach their teaching and students where they are failing or need improvement. Examples in my future science classroom include questions at the end of lessons, quizzes, and peer assessment of lab journals. Such low-stakes checks will provide me with ways to know whether students have understood such concepts and modify my lectures or tasks. On the other hand, summative assessments are used to assess the student’s learning at the middle or the end of a learning period. They give a teacher a general picture of a student's mastery of the unit. Some could be unit tests, presentations, or assignments such as research papers. These assessments involve higher stakes and frequently form part of a student's grade. Reliability of assessment relates to the ability of an assessment to measure its consistency. Factors such as unclear directions, time pressure, or uneven marking might influence reliability. In my classroom, I ensure that everything is transparent in the marking scheme and that the past paper is realistic to ensure clarity. Validity articulates the extent to which an assessment ascertains the target learning aim. Lack of validity of questions is possible if questions require skills that are not pertinent to the topic under consideration. In response, I would integrate corrective feedback with the learning goals and comprise several assessment strategies to detect various forms of knowledge acquisition.
