Abstract
The Colorado National Monument is an important landmark in Colorado characterized by the monolith towers of red sandstone and deep canyons. It can be found on the Colorado Plateau, which is located in the northeastern part of another large plateau called the Uncompahgre Plateau. The area surrounding the monument has been made a national park and is characterized by a series of Mesozoic Strata and among the few places on the plateau where people can see Precambrian basement rocks (Lohman, 1981). The following paper will carry out an extensive review of the available literature to show how the Colorado National Monument was formed. There is a wide variety of articles available on the matter, and a comprehensive literature review will be carried out to provide specific details on the events that led to the formation of the landmark. The introduction will provide some background information regarding the structures that can be found in the Plateau and the sections that follow will address some of the main periods during which the structures were formed. It will become evident that different rock strata came into existence during different eras, leading to a variety of features made up of different materials.
