Action of Psychopharmacologic Agents and Treatments (Coursework Sample)
The sample entailed responding to each of the following:
1. Explain the agonist-to-antagonist spectrum of action of psychopharmacologic agents, including how partial and inverse agonist functionality may impact the efficacy of psychopharmacologic treatments.
2. Compare and contrast the actions of g couple proteins and ion gated channels.
3. Explain how the role of epigenetics may contribute to pharmacologic action.
4. Explain how this information may impact the way you prescribe medications to patients. Include a specific example of a situation or case with a patient in which the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner must be aware of the medication’s action.

Question 1: Explain the agonist-to-antagonist spectrum of action of psychopharmacologic agents, including how partial and inverse agonist functionality may impact the efficacy of psychopharmacologic treatments
Agonists are chemicals that bind to a receptor. This activates the receptor, producing a physiological response. An antagonist is a chemical that reverses or stops the activity of an agonist (Berg & Clarke, 2018). A spectrum of action is defined as the rate at which biological action and efficacy are achieved and can be used to define agonists, antagonists, partial agonists, and inverse agonists in their treatment efficacy.
