I have the name hydrocortisone when used as medication but came from the hormone cortisol. Initially, I exist as a steroid but act as a compact hormone. Chemically, I am a complex organic compound that has a four-ring structure that includes oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. Do not confuse me with the dubious substances that sometimes are misused by athletes because I am a steroid. Those are huge families of organic compounds that are used to control the actions of different organs. Steroids are minor subgroups of hormones.
I came from a strong family of three dads that discovered me together with other steroids from 1930. These dads, Philip Hench, Tadeus Reichstein, and Edward Kendall had many discoveries that made them receive the Nobel prize in medicine or physiology in 1950. Proceedings of my analysis in laboratories was done mainly by Reichstein who was in Zurich and Kendall who was at the Mayo Clinic (Dikic, Riznic & Milovanovic, 2012). Imagine using a tonne of ‘adrenals from cattle' to extract 25 grams of extract to test! Such a difficult task is what Reichstein went through on the way to my discovery. He always assumed that he is dealing with a hormone (or a mixture) that was not a representative of a steroid. His assumption turned out to be false as from the extract of 25 grams; there were 29 steroids. From this, five were known and I, cortisol, was among the newcomers.
