Parenting Styles and Food habits: Questions
According to Ellyn Satter, Savannah picky eating habits are not ideal to her growth and development. However in order to effectively assess the situation I would ask her parents the following questions. Do you offer savannah different foods and drinks at home? This would be a very important question because it would allow me to understand whether she used to the same food. What action do you take when Savannah refuses to eat some food? Do you offer Savannah organized snacks and planned meals? This will enable me to depict whether Savannah picks meals because she is usually full at meal times.
To illustrate whether Savannah is affected nutritionally by her picky habits, the follow signs would suffice. Delayed speech (caused by lack of B12 found in meats, eggs and the like), dry skin and hair (caused by a deficiency in vitamins K2, D, A and E), cavities (caused by sugary foods), obesity (may not be considered by many as a nutritional deficiencies but it is one of the main problems in the US today), anxiety or depression (large intake of proteins causing amino acids deficiency). Any trace of these signs in Savannah will be an indication of nutritional deficiencies. 3 Despite her picking habits Savannah’s diet does consist of several ingredients sufficient for nutrition. According to her mother Savannah gets breastfed occasionally. Breast milk contains numerous nutrients like proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals, hormones, digestive enzymes and the like CITATION Oli12 \l 1033 (Olivia Balllard PhD & Ardythe L. Morrow PhD , 2012). These nutrients are vital for the infant’s development and growth. In addition Savannah likes apple juice. Apples are rich in vitamins, fibers, with no low percentage of calories making the juice sufficient for Savannah’s health and growth. The combination of these two drinks avail nutrients for Savannah despite her poor diet.
The philosophy of what, when, where, how much and whether to eat developed between the parent and the child is not followed adequately by Savannah’s parents. Initially the parents were in control of what Savannah ate but this control was gradually taken away by Savannah. Savannah controls when she eats as is illustrated by her crying for apple juice during meal times. Savannah does control now how much she eats and whether to eat it as is depicted by her refusal of some food in favor of others. These few points depict lack of Ellyn Satter’s philosophy in Savannah’s eating patterns. CITATION Ell15 \l 1033 (Satter, 2015)
According to Ellyn Satter, a competent eater is a child with the capability to learn and like new food, enjoys diverse foods, and has structured feeding patterns CITATION Ell15 \l 1033 (Satter, 2015). In order for Savannah to develop into a competent eater I would advice Savannah’s parents to always eat with her. Introduce Savannah to adults and other child who eat diverse foods. Offer Savannah food varieties to widen her experience. In addition and importantly Savannah’s parents need to instill table manners or teach her behavior during meal times. Lastly despite their need to conform Savannah they should instill the changes gradually to prevent hampering her development.
