“A reflection on my strengths and limitations in relation to professional practice and becoming a qualified nurse”
This assignment shall seek to reflect upon my professional practice as a student nurse. SWOT Analysis shall be utilized to highlight my identified strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This will allow me to narrow down skills that will be relevant and significant in the future; in combination with my personal development plan (PDP). My reflective abilities are crucial so I can pinpoint the level of improvement needed, which will be influenced by research. I will also reflect and analyze the requirements needed to become a registered nurse. This reflection shall be written in the first person as I shall be reflecting upon my own personal experiences. Reflection will also allow me to examine events in a broader context based on valid evidence CITATION McC11 \l 2057 (McCarthy, 2011). From my reflection, I shall be able to generate concepts and notions so when faced with new situations to be tackled effectively CITATION Gib88 \l 2057 (Gibbs, 1988).
A PDP, as defined by QAA (Quality Assurance Agency) (QAA, 2001; p.8) as ‘a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to reflect on their own learning, performance and/or achievement and to plan for their personal, educational and career development’. Using a PDP, I shall be able to recognize and develop my skills through a combination of reflection and practice. Beausaert et al (2011) notes that the PDP can influence the extent to which the student undertakes learning activities and will lead to improved performance in the student. To be proficient as a nurse, there are standards that a student should meet, set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2018). Having examined these standards, I was able to identify those which I have yet to gain competency. I still need to develop my delegating skills and enhancing the professional development of others through leadership skills.
