Payment Card Industry (PCI) is the portion of the financial industry that oversees the use of electronic methods of payment. PCI conformity is compulsory for every ecommerce trader that accepts either credit or debit card payments. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) outlines steps that all merchants who accept card payments, save or dispatch credit, debit or prepaid card data need to use and ensure secure transactions. The major purpose of PCI DSS is to minimize the possibility of data loss on debit and credit cards (DSS, 2016). It proposes how this could be avoided, recognized and how to act if possible data loss occurs. It protects both merchants and cardholders.
Companies that are not PCI compliant are defenceless to crime and cyber-attacks. Being non-compliant may lead to severe security gaps. Merchants should comply with PCI standards to avoid the risk of data loss. There are consequences of PCI non-compliant firms as discussed below:
