Ethanol is also referred to as grain or ethyl alcohol. The odorless, colorless, and flammable substance is used in alcoholic drinks, locomotive fuel, and in the manufacture of medical and cleaning products. The production of biofuel involves the cycling of biomass, including corn and sugarcane. Producing ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass involves several steps, including pretreatment, fermentation, and recovery and purification of the end product.
The first step of the conversion process is pretreatment, which encourages the enzymatic attack of the cellulose and hemicelluloses. The process also has the following advantages; it reduces the costs of operations, depolymerizes incomplete cellulose, and alters the lignin structure. The pretreatment stage is classified into three; physical, chemical, and biological. The physical treatment process involves milling, microwaving, and pyrolysis. In the milling process, the lignocellulosic materials are mechanically broken; this process doesn’t involve any chemical substances that are considered friendly to the ecosystem.
