The administration's present immigration policy has brought to the United States economic, security, and humanitarian policy to a comparatively contrasted level. The strategy incorporates the application of force as a means of promoting the use of legal pathways while providing incentives that manage migration. For instance, the extension of the validity for Title 42 expulsions and the occurrence of a humanitarian parole program for some citizens to control the outflow of immigrants. This is reflected as an effort to balance security matters and people-oriented attention. Nevertheless, problems still exist as so many illegal entrants to the US exist. The Department of Homeland Security's incapability to cope with the mentioned situations is considered the most significant challenge.
From this perspective, the post-9/11 era can be seen as the separation between the two realms of American immigration policies, where human factors like emotional reactions and societal conceptions were as essential as policy-induced national security. Creating the Department of Homeland Security was crucial to address weaknesses and defend against evolving threats. Redefining roles and mission areas hampered communication, data sharing, and electronic system transformation. Critics say resources and efforts have been diverted from essential security challenges at the expense of other security operations (Chishti et al., 2024).
Concerning the issues of securing US/Canada and US/Mexico borders, the current policy provides the logistical, humanitarian, and political intricacies contributing to the complex continuing issue. Legal flights of people and enforcement measures represent the balancing efforts to protect borders and simultaneously express compassionate actions (Chishti et al., 2024). Despite that, policy implementation remains to deliver major issues in terms of the financing and coordination among the various departments.
On the subject of illegal immigrants and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on immigration policy, I find that U.S. policy has had difficulty properly dealing with illegal migrants.
