The United Nations defines inequality as the state of being unequal, especially in status, rights and opportunities (UNDP, 2019). In Singapore, the income gap contributes to a high level of inequality. Low-income earners have a low purchasing power than high-income earners. The rich can afford gods and services in large quantities as compared to the poor. As a result, the gap between the rich and the poor has drastically increased in Singapore. This increase shows that Singapore faces inequality challenges. According to the report by Chan (2019), some Singaporeans cannot afford three meals a day while some people have enough to through away. Generally, inequality is the state where one person has a better opportunity than others.
