The 1918 Influenza Pandemic
The 1918 influenza pandemic was the first great pandemic. This is because it spread all over the world and killed fifty million people. More of these people were young adults with healthy immune systems and not the elderly or people with compromised immune systems. Though the virus that caused this great pandemic was first discovered early in the year 1918, scientists believed the virus started years before. Influenza pandemic also known as the ‘Spanish flu’ is believed to have first started in Spain. There is scarcity of evidence to support the claim since Spain did not participate in the first world war. The countries which participated in the war were worst hit than those that did not.
