Introduction
According to Roberts (2005), a crisis is a situation accompanied by a grave disruption that affects the psychological homeostasis, thus, renders one unable to cope up with mechanisms. Roberts (2005) stresses that crisis may as well result to distress and impairments in human beings. A crisis may be caused by stress, trauma or hazardous happening. However, not everyone who experiences anxiety, trauma or dangerous event is entitled to an emergency, only those who are not able to cope with the situation will succumb to a crisis while those who can well surrender to the position will not develop crisis. There is, therefore, need for crisis intervention in the case of disaster. Crisis intervention is a primary responsibility of the counselors and so they need to understand the best way to deal with individuals' situation and manage various kinds of crisis without seemingly owning the problem from the individuals with a crisis. This, therefore, signifies that the crisis managers need to understand the crisis intervention strategies which include models and theories used to manage crisis (Roberts, 2005). The various scientists have developed various models and steps that guidance counselors in managing crisis. For instance, Hawton and James (2008), suggests six steps of crisis intervention which have been categorized into three main steps, they include; assessing, listening and lastly acting. According to Roberts (2005), the counselors handling various kinds of strategies need to explore the models such as ABC models of crisis intervention to be aware of the best ways that are both active and directives when managing a crisis. Comprehensive models and theories can best handle situations such as bereaved children as well as adolescents (Morgan & Roberts, 2010). The ABC model of crisis intervention refers to a comprehensive social science model that gives steps and guides that a counselor should follow to achieve the client’s need and expectation (Hawton & James, 2008). The Alberta’s ABC model of crisis intervention was designed in the 1980s by a group of suicidologist who also developed a CPR risk assessment tool in response to the then increased suicidal cases following acute economic hardship (Slaikeu, 1990). The ABC model is abbreviated as will be discussed below;
