Introduction
Over the years, there has an increase in the use of hard drugs with many people being addicted. The ease of access to the drugs as they are sold locally in many places is one of the reasons why most people use them. Unlike medications, which can be prescribed by a medical practitioner, most of the drugs are used illegally without any prescription. There are many health hazards associated with the use of narcotics as the individual involved together with their family, and the entire society is affected. Drug addiction does not only affect the individual who engages in it but also those around him or her. The dangers can have far-reaching consequences and affect the mental capacities of the person involved. Misuse of drugs brings many changes in the nervous and sensory systems, as well as the functioning of the brain. Several risks are associated with the use cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, and cannabis.
Comparison and Contrast of the Neuropharmacological Basis for the Risks Associated with the Use of Cocaine, Ecstasy, Heroin, and Cannabis
Cocaine is one of the widely used drugs and is considered classy and preferred by celebrities in the music, media and fashion industries. The drug has an impact on the brain, heart and the emotions of an individual who gets addicted to using it. The consequences of this drug are long term and threaten the life of regular users. The risks of using this drug can be both short-term and long-term. Initially after taking the drug, one feels high, but the experience lasts only for a short period and is followed by depression as the user wants to get more of it. Moreover, there are short-term effects associated with the loss of appetite and failure to get enough sleep (Wagner & Triggle 2003, p. 36).
