Telehealth and Remote Diabetes Monitoring
Telehealth is the technological devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and computers to deliver health care services at the comfort of the patient. It involves the use of information technology in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients. It enables distance patient-doctor interaction, education, care, and interventions. Telehealth involves the use of a variety of digital technologies including mobile phones, email, videoconferencing, nurse call centers, and checking of vital signs to enable remote access to health care services (Greenwood et al, 2014, p.2). It also makes it easy for people in remote or rural areas to have access to health care services. Generally, telehealth plays an important role in the remote diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients.
The advent of telehealth is important in the management of patients with chronic debilitating diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus. This is possible through Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). Remote patient monitoring is an aspect of telehealth where patients are monitored outside the hospital environment, in remote areas, and homes at cheaper rates. It also involves the use of various technological gadgets. It is crucial in chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Some scholars argue that remote patient monitoring has redefined the patient-doctor relationship by improving the level of intimacy between the two parties (Piras & Miele 2019, p.1). Others argue that it reshapes health care rather than making it better (Piras & Miele 2019, p.2). Regardless of which particular role it plays, it is clear that remote patient monitoring plays a crucial role in the management of patients with diabetes mellitus.
