Employability Skills in Clinical and Social Care
Employability skills are critical in the delivery of optimum services to the general public and it helps in ensuring positive patient outcomes. These skills are crucial in the development of expertise and knowledge that can help in achieving organizational goals such as patient-centered care (Bokhour et al. 2018). This reflective report provide an exposition on the range of employability skills acquired through practice focusing primarily on compassion, values, and professional behaviors within health and social care professionals.
Gibbs Model of Reflection
Employability skills are critical in the modern workplace because they define the transferable skills an individual possess to make an organization successful (Håkansson Eklund et al. 2019; Ilardo & Speciale 2020).
Description: I once worked as an emergency room nurse and a Latino patient was brought in by his family who claimed that the client had an episode which they desired admission to ensure the main issue is solved before the case exacerbates. Upon examination by the physician, the patient was discharged with a prescription. The family declined and asked to speak to the nurse manager because they feared for the patient’s life. Upon probing the family members while at the waiting room, further examination led to the diagnosis of a novel condition which the physician had not noticed (compassion) (Stalpers et al. 2021). I liaised with the nurse manager and the patient was admitted and the appropriate therapy commenced.
Feelings: The case scenario explained above highlighted critical issues affecting the quality delivery of care. Indeed, while consulting with the patient’s family, I noticed that their suffering was mainly a consequence of neglect given that despite availing themselves at the hospital multiple times, they did not get the required help because the physicians did not consider the essentiality of having a patient centered approach (compassion and the value of communication). Chu et al. (2019) and Ilardo & Speciale (2020) note that immigrants experience disparities in the quality of care and satisfaction with patient-physician interactions.
Evaluation: Once I notified the nurse manager about the patient’s case, mobilization occurred and the necessary precautions were taken by different members of the healthcare team to improve patient outcomes while addressing the family’s concerns. This juncture highlighted the essentiality of collaborating with other professionals and also asserted the significance of teamwork in achieving positive outcomes especially in a decentralized healthcare system.
Analysis: The case scenario revealed that practitioners neglect can interfere with quality delivery of care and development of critical employability skills. What is more, most of the nurses on rotation did not take a further initiative to collect the essential information about the patient’s case. Indeed, positive employment practices are founded on organizational systems which not only make employees feel valued and supported but also promote adoption of best practices regardless of the individual differences such as race and culture which account for significant health disparities (Kamaliah et al. 2018; Kuipers et al. 2019).
Conclusion: A key aspect of being successful in the contemporary job market is developing essential employability skills which support competence. Nonetheless, developing these skills requires the identification of the value and crucial behaviors which support effective practices (McCallum et al. 2020). In the process, the healthcare team was forced to assure the patient and his family that the hardships they underwent will not recur and the potentiality of similar mistakes will be countered by ensuring an accountable workforce culture (Sihombing et al. 2018; (Sisodia & Agrawal 2019).
Action Plan: The incidence confirmed the need for maintaining professional standards in clinical practice by ensuring integrity is observed in all the procedures (Stalpers et al. 2021). Indeed, achieving a patient centered approach requires the practitioners to make decisions based on the needs of the clients and their families.
