Oil Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
Introduction
Oil drilling is a practice that has been taking place for millions of years since it provides and drives most of the economic sectors in many countries for instance transports, manufacturing and energy sectors all depend on oil and gas. The United States of America consumes 26 percent of the world’s oil with most of it imported from oil producing nations in the Middle East (Cirilla et al. 121). A few years ago the discovery of possibility of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge brought relief to Alaskan people who saw employment and less importation of oil by the country. On the contrary, being among the only remaining and largest wilderness that is a habitat to some of the spectacular and rare wildlife in the arctic it attracted debates on whether oil drilling will have more benefits (Cirilla et al. 121).
Despite being in full support by Alaska government and its people, the overwhelming criticisms from the scientists, environmentalists and the federal government led to its stoppage. The arguments that states that only 0.4 percent of the oil needed from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that is not economically significant compared to the damages that come in handy with the oil drilling activities. In light of this, I oppose the oil drilling activities in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Cirilla et al. 121).
Thesis Statement.
The research was to outline the negativity of oil drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Discussion
Endangering the Wildlife Inhabitants.
Oil drilling in Alaska and other offshore regions should be discouraged because it disrupts the routes of migration of wildlife through fences and traffic. In addition to that, the drilling makes noises for the wildlife habitats (Davis et al. 178). Their is complexity of biological organizations, and they are often victimized by human activities. Regular increases of traffic in vehicles to sites where oil are being drilled are a major cause of noise pollution in these areas. According to researchers, the negativity of these leads to; interference in communication by the songbird during nesting and breeding seasons and changes the prey and predator dynamics (Robertson et al. 107). Mammals that live in this region are at high danger of falling a victim of road accidents because they can be killed by moving vehicles. Jackson Hole’s pronghorn antelope is an example of such unfortunate mammal.
Spills Of Oil On Offshore And Land Drilling Region.
Projected oil expansion would happen on the 1.5-million-acre plains in the coastal side that lies in between Brooks’ mountain range and Arctic Ocean. In addition, continuous drilling of oil in these sites leads to spill of oil on the surface (Robertson et al. 107). This is because penetrating oil from land, drilling liquids that are to be inserted into wellbore to grease the drilling bit. These fluids are often splashed and spilled all over the pad but it is recommended that they should be seized in lined pits for dumping.
An oil company in La Planta County, Colorado, frequently leaks fluids for drilling, but it is trying to reduce the total number of spills incidences to 160 leaks per year (Davis et al. 178). This is still much to the environment and the overwhelming collective effects of abundant small leaks on the land has a negative impact and effects in health that can result into cancer.
Spills of oil into the offshore, like for example BP’s water that are deep at Horizon unit in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, had an effect to mammals living in water through breath in, absorption and direct contact to toxic oil. These toxic oil causes: they destroy some animals’ vital organs like brain, kidney, and spleen. Causes suppression in immune system and failure in reproduction system. In addition to that, due to long-term changes in environment response activities leads to disturbing and injuries to animals (Davis et al. 178).The Wilderness association strongly rejects the efforts to encourage drilling of oil in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The U.S President Barrack Obama who burned the oil drilling in those areas recently joined them; he said the drilling of oil in those regions only compute 0.4% of the total oil consumption in the country and later suggested that the Nation can save up to 0.8% of oil consumption by minimizing their oil consumption (Robertson et al. 107).
This will lead to wildlife conservation in those regions.
Peaceful Sites For Tourists Are Spoiled By Gas And Oil Traffic And Infrastructure.
The Americans main economic activities for the locals are tourism and outdoor recreation. However, noisy compressors, oil tanks, network of roads and power poles are composed of attractive features and to the locals; they are a major source of income. The increase of noise near fishing facilitates the decrease in number of some wonderful species of birds and this will reduce the number of visitors coming to those places for an outdoor experience, and to explore the region, leading to the reduction of revenue to the locals in those terrains (Robertson et al. 107). About $646 billion in spent by American government for an outdoor recreation. The reduction in recreation on those areas that is being caused by oil drilling makes the government to go at a loose on the billions they spend to improve it. Therefore, for the country to benefit from the tourism industry and outdoor recreation facilities, they should strongly oppose the drilling of gas and oil on the offshore areas.
