Word-Explorer was founded in 2009 by Jane Smith and her colleagues. It is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to provide reading and study material, including short stories and novels, to children from low-income households. Word-Explorer reaches its beneficiaries via community preschool, after-school, and literacy programs across the District of Columbia. The organization marked its 10th anniversary in 2018 and celebrated having provided more than fifty-thousand books that successfully reached children across the region. Despite Word-Explorer's success story, Jane and her colleagues strived to work hard amidst overwhelming demand and limited resources to facilitate their mission. This is to say that, the organization was able to provide a fraction of the quantity of free reading and study materials needed in various literacy programs.
While trying to figure out ways to meet the incredible demand for books within a limited budget, the management at Word-Explorer settled for a new idea. Jane and her colleagues decided to develop a single venture that would bring together publishers, donors, and other potential partners to provide reading and study materials at a very low price.
