To teach us how to create leads for quotatıons properly, we were asked to fınd dıfferent quotes from Malcolm x's The Ballot or The Bullet speech and create different lead-ıns for them. The format for thıs assıgnment was MLA, double-spaced, with only one specıfıed source.

Creating Lead-Ins for Quotations Assignment
Two examples of Malcom X’s statements on what the problems facing Negroes were:
* Lead-in at the beginning: Malcolm X, in his “The Ballot or the Bullet” speech, argues, “It shows that the Southern section of the country, the states that are most heavily concentrated with Negroes, are the ones that have senators and congressmen standing up filibustering and doing all other kinds of trickery to keep the Negro from being able to vote” (4).
In the example of a lead-in at the beginning above, the lead-in is identified in a red font, the required present tense verb is highlighted in green, and the page number of the quotation in the source is identified in blue.
b. Lead-in in the middle: “When Negroes become too heavily concentrated in a certain area and begin to gain too much political power”, claims Malcolm X, an African American leader in the civil rights movement, “the white man comes along and changes the district lines” (5).

Two examples of Malcolm X’s memorable and distinctive phrasing or rhetoric (the ways he uses language to persuade):
* Lead-in at the end: “All of us have suffered here, in this country, political oppression at the hands of the white man, economic exploitation at the hands of the white man, and social degradation at the hands of the white man” remarks Malcolm X, in his speech “The Ballot or The Bullet” (1).
