Anthropometric principles and measures relevant in designing space: students’’ desks
The key determinants of interior and architectural design include our motion, body dimensions and perception of space. The minimum measures and requirements considered in planning of building layout include an average adult’s dimensions and clearances. It is equally imperative to increase clearances for the purposes of enabling easy accommodation for individuals larger than average. Researchers have recently focused on the ergonomics in designing workplace and work settings (Al Saleh and Ramadan 205). A target population’s dependable anthropometric data were essential when designing for that particular population; else the product would be considered unsuitable for the user. Researchers have vastly acknowledged anthropometric data use in designing school desks (Metin and Kenan 1080). Acquiring fitness between man-machine mechanisms requires maximum user population in using a workplace.at least 95% of the user population should be generally accommodated. It is imperative to therefore design school furniture based on the users’ anthropometric dimensions. This study focuses on the anthropometric principles and measures relevant in designing students’ desks by using students’ data from a sample of 400 students as collected by Qutubuddin, Hebbala and Kumarb.
This study considers anthropometric measures taken by Qutubuddin et al. (1181) using standard measuring methods. The body dimensions were acquired using an anthropometer. Measurement repeatability and precision was acquired by practice before the data gathering sessions. The subsequent anthropometric dimensions were acquired under sitting condition as portrayed in the subsequent figure.

1 Stature: Floor to vertex distance (top of head)
2 Seated height: head top in a normal relaxed position
3 Seated mid should height: shoulder’s uppermost height
4 Popliteal height: the thigh’s height immediately hindmost of the knee
5 Hip breadth- the extreme horizontal distance from one hip to another
6 Elbow rest height- distance separating the elbow’s lowest area and the seat
7 Buttock popliteal length: distance (horizontal) separating the buttocks’ most posterior point to the lower leg’s back.
8 Buttock knee length: distance (horizontal) separating the uncompressed buttocks’ most posterior and the knee’s most anterior point
9 Thigh clearance- distance (vertical) separating the thigh’s anterior surface maximum bulge and the seat surface (using shortened anthropometer)
10 Sitting eye height: the eye’s inner corner height seated in a normal relaxed position
Shoulder breadth- furthest horizontal distance from one shoulder to the other
Knee height- height of the knee’s highest point.
The table below portrays the anthropometric data considered for this study as acquired from Qutubuddin et al. (1181) and is considered highly credible.
