A Zombie is a Slave Forever
What do most people think a zombie is? How are they wrong?
Most people think zombies as walking dead, a being without a soul or someone with no free will. They are wrong because zombies are not an alien enemy. Rather a New World phenomenon that arose from a mixture of old African religious beliefs and the pain of slavery in pre-independence Haiti.
In paragraph 4, Wilentz says that for slaves, “Death was feared but also wished for.” Why?
Slaves life was brutal full of hunger, extreme work and cruel discipline and thus death was wished for because it was viewed as from the sugar plantation and return to Africa, or Ian Guinee. It was the slave’s only way to take control of his or her own body. Death was also feared because of the thought of becoming a zombie described as a dead person who could not cross over to their final rest that is the green, leafy, heavenly Africa, becoming a slave in death.
