Discussion. In the playwright the Fences, August Wilson introduces the Maxons family of Africa American descent whose life is fenced by the impalpable beliefs drawn from a historic American century racial battle. In the dirt yards of the family household, many relations wither and others blossom. The protagonist Troy Maxon thwarts all the family opportunities preventing the intrusion of any member of the household which in the event restrains his relationship with his wife and sons. The plot stems from the African slaves that had for long been relegated to the periphery, caricatured and displaced in theatrical drama (Gantt 1-25). As such, the author uses the character in his play to grapple with the racial theme in a bid to structure a just American world that all people for all humankind.
Responses. From the onset of Wilson’s Fences, the author examines the deploring and far-reaching ramifications of the racial injustices that tainted America at the dawn of the 1950's towards the eve of the civil rights movement (Shannon 111). The play revolves around the character of Maxson Troy; an iconic baseball player who is relegated from Major Baseball League on subtle claims of his black race (Koprince 349).
