Description of the three-term or concepts
Looking-glass self
As children grow, they acquire skills that are necessary for them to be part of the society. The looking-glass self is a social psychological concept developed by Charles Horton Cooley in 1902. The concept states that the self of a person grows out of interpersonal interactions in the society and other people’s perception. The implication is that other people's opinions or sentiments shape others because one tries to reinforce what people say in his/her behavior. Put simply; our social interactions act as a mirror. Therefore, people measure their worth by how others perceive them. The external force has a significant role in shaping one's life in addition to internal factors. Sometimes in an environment where one is not accepted, this concept can make a person demean his/her value. Looking glass self is useful in creating consistency in someone's life since the society shapes his/her behavior.
