A common example is an employer restricting the use of social media both with the content shared by employees and access to social media through work computers.
Jamal works from home almost every day and decides to log into his social media platform on his work computer. He comments and likes some posts and pictures while logged in. The HR handbook states that employees are not allowed to use company computers for social media use. Are there any liabilities to Jamal or the employer from his actions? Why or why not?

Considering Jamal's case scenario, it is clear that his use of work computers to access social media during working hours contravenes company policy and, therefore, exposes him and the company to potential liabilities.
First and foremost, Jamal violates company policy, as using work computers to access social media is against the HR handbook. In this way, he exposes himself to disciplinary action by the company that could range from warnings to termination of his employment. At the same time, it must be noted that using work computers to access social media exposes Jamal to data security risks that could compromise the company’s data security. Common methods such as phishing, vishing, and ransomware attacks all stand to negatively impact the company and thus expose Jamal to a plethora of legal issues.
