Approach Key People Main Tenets Assessment Strategies Interventions Experiential The key people are therapists and clients. The main tenets are reflection, synthesis, critical analysis, and accountability. The approach encourages the learner's active engagement in experimenting, posing questions, solving problems, constructing meaning, and being active and curious. The assessment evaluates the client's present experience and facilitates desirable changes. Therapists use the present experience of the client to enable re-experiencing of a certain emotion or moment (Murphy & Joseph, 2019). it enables them to process their current thoughts and emotions in a better way. Therapists engage clients by offering focused reflection and direct experience to facilitate the development of desirable perceptions, boost knowledge, and clarify values. Expressive activities or tools are applied to recreate and re-enact situations from both past and present relationships. Therapists support clients by using role-playing techniques, art, music, or props to identify with existing emotions that promote their self-esteem, responsibilities, and successes (Murphy & Joseph, 2019). Clients release negative emotions, shame, and stress linked to the situations that affect them, such as painful feelings. Psychoanalytic The key people are psychoanalysts and clients. Instinctual forces influence human cognition and behaviors, while forgotten events that occur in childhood determine development. Mental disturbances, including depression, anxiety, and neurosis, are triggered by cognition and human behavior. Unintentional acts and dreams offer unconscious materials while projecting helps clients get relief from infantile conflicts. Encouragement is applied to enable the client to gain insight, understand their behaviors, and eventually learn the meaning of symptoms such as interpretation, parapraxes-free association, inkblots, transference analysis, and resistance analysis (Thomä & Kächele, 2020). The approach focuses on treating emotional difficulties through enhancing communication between the affected individual and the psychoanalyst. It helps gain a better insight and impact of the individual's inner world and its role in shaping relationships, emotions, and behavior. Interventions include confrontation, clarification, and interpretation to enable individuals to understand their behaviors. In clarification, the analyst explains what is happening in the client's mind (Thomä & Kächele, 2020). Confrontation involves improving awareness of behavior's nonverbal aspects. Moreover, interpretation proper entails a hypothesis proposed by the analyst to improve unconscious meaning and various aspects of the client's communication. Cognitive-Behavioral The key people are clients and therapists. It is based on individual conceptualization and formulation of a client's problems in cognitive terms. The approach needs sound therapeutic alliance and promotes active participation and collaboration. It is problem-focused and goal-oriented, where it initially emphasizes the treatment. Moreover, it is time-limited and educative and promotes prevention, structured, and improved ability of clients to respond, evaluate and identify dysfunctional beliefs and thoughts.
