Correlation between Parent Involvement and Student Success in the Classroom in Houston, Texas
Abstract
Parent involvement is crucial in influencing student performance in the classroom as shown by this study that conducted research based on Houston Texas. The study indicates that parent involvement through adequate provision and regular check-ups on their children in improving performance and creating success for such students. This involvement is a sign of responsibility and remains a role of the parents to ensure that their children are to stressed when in school. The study also investigates the engagement of students by their parents when at home and even the level of academic assistance that parents offer to their children. For this purpose, the researcher aims at developing authentic results for the study by conducting a study on 30 participants, out of who, 20 are teachers and the rest 10 are students. There are two designed questionnaires to be filled by the teachers and the students separately, where each contains questions specifically designed for either teachers or students. The results indicate that parent involvement has an impact on student performance in the classroom, suggesting that parents should always focus on motivating their children. The study also employs quantitative methods of data collections, which involve the questionnaire and interview methods, the questionnaires were distributed to the participants in both digital and physical forms, with the physical questionnaire forms printed on handout papers. The interviewing process was only applied to both the teachers and parents.

Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Introduction
Student success is a dream for everyone in the field of education and therefore is a matter that concerns everyone. It is therefore very important that factors determining its occurrence are studied and understood. Although many scholars have studied the matter from different perspectives, trying to understand the very critical issue, their findings have never been exploitative and there are always areas where new studies can focus on. This study would seek to focus on the role of parents, and especially in their involvement in schools, and how this make students perform better in classrooms.
The study is timely at a time when lockdowns have made many students study from home. This has made parents to be more involved in their children studies and has also underscored their roles in education and school performance, above bearing the financial responsibility for their children fees. The exposure of the pandemic allows a close relation between the parents who are playing the teachers monitory role to their children at home. Students well-being, care and academics have been previously been the role of the teacher for a greater part of the year than for the parents. Only a few parents have previously shown their effort and concern to their children in their academic journey.
Existing studies have emphasised on the importance of the parent involvement in the academic journey of their children and how that influences the success of the students. Studies have shown different facets of the understanding of parental involvement in the students’ academics ranging from material support according to Park, Stone and Holloway (2017) to that of aiding the students in their academic related assignments (Rahman, 2001). Literature on the matter of parents’ involvement still depict that a lot need to be done with the evolving generation. A call has been made for the understanding of the responsibility of the parent in the academic affairs for the students. Boonk, Gijselaers, Ritzen and Brand-Gruwel (2018) points out that there is a strong involvement of the parent’s involvement in the early childhood education and which changed over the period as children grew older. Therefore, the study intended to establish the relationship that existed between the parent’s involvement and students’ success levels in Houston, Texa‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍s.
1.2 Problem Statement
Nations around the globe focus on the realization of their future goals both short term and long terms through focusing on the development. However, critical analysis shows that education was the back bone of any nation and its success (Alam, Forhad & Ismail, 2020). All the professions were found to be natured at the school and grow later based on the foundation that was laid. However, student performance is not an obvious result. The input of all the related parties in the education sector has been important in determining the level of classroom success. Success is perceived as a result of a combined effort of the teacher, student, and the parent (Creech, 2003).
From the existing literature, it has been agreeable that parents’ involvement has a positive influence on the students’ performance but evidence show that there has been low effort from the parents’ side in the attempt to give necessary support to their children for academic excellence (Đurišić & Bunijevac, 2017). The involvement of the parent should be now a campaign with schools being advocated to incorporate a partnering relationship with the parent. Constant communication with the teacher has not been the norm of the day and which has resulted to a gap between the parent and the teacher.
Texas has however exhibited a great struggle by the teachers in the attempt to quench students’ academic desire over the past (Terminated, 2012). With the rekindled need of the parents support to the students’ academic wise in the pandemic period, the current study sought to establish if the parents’ involvement in students school affairs has existed in Houston, Texa‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍s and weather this involvement levels are affecting the performance of students in the state. Parents’ understanding on their responsibility within the state and the expectations that lead to more inclusive coordination with the teachers shall be assessed.
1.3 Purpose of Study
The study aimed at establishing the correlation that existed between parents’ involvement and student’s success in schools in Houston, Texas.
