Utility Sector in Malaysia
The utility sector involves water and energy utility services, whereby energy involves power transmission, generation, and electricity distribution. Some of the companies providing utilities in Malaysia includes Brite-Tech Bhd, Ranhill Utilities Berhad, Sabah Electricity Sdn, syarikat SESCO Bhd, Tenanga National Berhad (TNB), Pengurusan Asset Air Berhad (PAAB) and Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SAPAN) (Saidurn et al., 2017). In 2020, the sector recorded RM10.8 billion ratified investments and appeared the second contributor after real estate in the service sector. The government has put up efforts to ensure the sustainability of the energy and water sector. Some of the efforts being enforced by the government are: new infrastructure and good governance for adequate energy storage and harnessing renewable energies. The government has also defined a master plan (2017-2030) for green technology improvement to create a resource-efficient nation and maintain low carbon levels (Saidurn et al., 2017). The energy sector faces drastic transformation. Changing consumer expectations, new digital technologies, and distributed renewable generation make energy challenging, competitive, and more complex.
