Introduction
Metal industries are very profitable and have for years acted a job creation places globally. Metal industries require having the Department of heating and cutting aluminum that is not the case in many of such industries. The lack of heating and cutting aluminum department is due to lack of knowledge about how recycling of aluminum can save such companies a lot of profits. The first reason for having such department is the fact that aluminum is the most widely used metal in metal industries. Secondly such a company requires always having a quick replacement of its occasionally damaged tools and also having a lot of scrap metals as waste that can be recycled into aluminum and late sell the parts to make profits (Kardos, 1961).This department is a very significance one in that it saves much money for the company from the recycling of unused aluminum and scrap metals after which the parts are sold.
Heating is a metalworking process that is normally used to change both the chemical and physical properties of a material. During this process very extreme temperature to either softens or hardens a material. It is a very common process in glass manufacture (Aneziris, 2010). Cutting, on the other hand, is a metalworking process that involves using a cutting fluid such as oil-water, gels, pastes, oils air and other gasses.
Aluminum
Aluminum is a conductive, light and a metal that is resistant to corrosion with a very strong oxygen affinity. This metal have an advantage of a combination of properties such as durable, light, a good conductor of both heat and electricity and can easily be shaped by extruding and molding. Another thing about aluminum is its low density compared to other metals and the fact that it reacts very rapidly with the oxygen forming an oxide layer that is impervious thus preventing further oxidation and thus no need for coating it for a protection of the surface (Kardos, 1961).
All the above have made aluminum a widely used in marine industries, architectural construction aerospace and transport industries, food industries for cooking and packaging making electronics. Refining or recycling of aluminum is not very common practice in metal industries because of the rare amount of energy that is required electrolyze the aluminum oxide (Kosarev, 2011).
The tools and equipment needed by workers in the heating and cutting aluminum department
The following are some of the tools and equipment needed for heating and cutting of aluminum are classified into the following categories: eye and face protection tools, head protection tools, foot and leg protection tools, hand and arm protection tools (Ashby, 2002).
Eye and face protection tools are used to protect individuals from a face, and an eye injury and such tools include; prescription spectacles, goggles, welding shields, face shields (Aneziris, 2010).
Head protection tools include hard hats, helmets, and head gears to protect individuals from head injuries.
Foot and leg protection tools such as leggings, toe guards metatarsal guards, safety shoes, a combination of shin and foot guards, foundry shoes, hand and arm protection tools that include: protective gloves, chemical and liquid resistant gloves (Aneziris, 2010).
Body protective tools such as leather clothing, duck clothing’s, treated cotton and wool clothing. Earplugs, earmuffs and canal caps are hearing protective devices that can be used. All the above tools are for the protection of individuals. Other tools that are required in this department are aluminum cutting machine tool, solid cutting tools, holder, heat containers, respirators sound proof equipment to harm caused by the loud noise of equipment while heating (Ashby, 2002).
Collection of the scrap aluminum and used aluminum to recycle aluminum
Heating and cutting aluminum industry depend much on the collection of damaged used aluminum products such as used usuries, used aluminum beverage cans that contribute to the highest percentage of recycled aluminum, lids of made of aluminum, die casts and used aluminum food containers and aluminum in building siding. Other materials from which aluminum can be recycled are gutters, storm window frames, waste car components and furniture that are lawn. Other sources of aluminum to be recycled are aircrafts, boats computers, bicycles, cookware and automobiles (Aneziris, 2010).
Recycling the damaged and used aluminum through cutting and heating
Below is a diagram that shows how aluminum can is recycled in a heating and cutting aluminum industry.
Source: (Kardos, 1961).
Aluminum recycling is that process that facilitates scrap and waste used aluminum to be reused again and again after its first production as a new product. This processes normally involves re.-melting the scrap aluminum metal in a simple way which is very cheap although uses a lot of energy than during creation of new aluminum that is normally done through aluminum oxide electrolysis that is normally mined first from an ore of bauxite and later through the process of Bayer it is refined. Scrap aluminum recycling needs only five percent of the energy that is used in the production of new aluminum. Due to this reason about a third of all aluminum made in the USA normally comes from recycling of scrap aluminum metals. It’s very important to note that recycling aluminum does not damage the structure of the metal and can therefore indefinitely be recycled and still be used in the production of any product which the newly made aluminum could have used. Aluminum can not only be recycled to produce only aluminum products but also a product known as an alum that is useful in making shaving alum that is used to stop bleeding from small shaving cuts, hair stiffener, wax, alum powder anti bacterial agent foamier and fire retardant (Kardos, 1961).
There are enormous environmental benefits that come with recycling aluminum. First during the aluminum recycling it’s only around five percent of the carbon dioxide that is produced and even below five percent when a complete cycle of mining is considered together with transportation of aluminum as compared with production of raw aluminum. In the production of raw aluminum, open cut mining is mostly used to obtain aluminum ore, and this normally destroys big sections of natural land (Kosarev, 2011).
.
Other Confirmed benefits of recycling aluminum include the following: first recycling of aluminum normally creates less water pollution when compared to production of new aluminum metal from ore (Kosarev, 2011).
Recycling of only one ton of aluminum has been confirmed to saves an equivalent of two thousand three hundred and fifty gallons of gasoline energy. This amount is equal to the total amount of electricity used over a ten years period by a typical home. Aluminum products do not wears out and can, therefore, be recycled as many times as possible forever and ever. Scrap and used aluminum cans are normally melted into ingots that weigh thirty thousand tons that are enough aluminum to produce more than one million cans. The United States of America normally earns more than one billion dollars yearly from the recycling of aluminum. From each pound of aluminum product regained saves the same continent of the USA energy resources that is required in generation of seven point and half kilowatt-hours of electricity. That is enough energy that is saved by this process of aluminum recycling enhancing the meeting of lighting needs of the Pittsburgh city size for six good years (Ashby, 2002).
The following a procedure of recycling aluminum beverage cans that a heating and cutting aluminum industry can employ. Division of the cans from the waste by use of an eddy current separator and then the can are cut into equal small size pieces: then this pieces are either mechanically or chemically and well blocked to reduce losses through oxidation during melting. Locks are then put into the furnace where heating takes place at a temperature of up to 850 degrees centigrade producing aluminum that is molten (Aneziris, 2010). Then removal of dross after which the hydrogen dissolved is degassed where the molten aluminum disassociates hydrogen that comes from water vapor and contaminants of hydrocarbons and then depending on the desired purity aluminum is added. Then tapping of the furnace and the pouring of molten aluminum follows then the process is repeated to prepare the next batch.
Getting market for the readymade aluminum products
Aluminum products are needed in by both local and foreign consumers because of their many uses in most industries. Japan is one of the four available markets for aluminum products. From the look of things, there is a probability of aluminum scrap buying expansion in few years to come. Also, the foundries have currently begun to produce them on remarkably the purchasing of the scrap aluminum. Due to these reasons there is the likelihood for more and more markets for the aluminum produced in heating and cutting aluminum (Aneziris, 2010).
