Commentary: Primer Design for COVID-19
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is rapidly spreading across the globe. The nature of the infection can either be symptomatic or asymptomatic, which necessitates a rapid detection protocol to determine diagnoses. As such, there are a number of SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic kits, but there is limited public knowledge and awareness on how these kits work. The detection of unique sequences of viral RNA is based on real-time PCR. Sample collection is commonly done through nose swabs upon which RNA is extracted. Reverse transcription is an enzyme-mediated step, whereby the reverse transcriptase converts the RNA template into a complementary DNA (cDNA). A polymerase chain reaction(PCR) is the carried out with the aid of primers for detection purposes for either a positive or negative case (Park et al., 2020).
