Abstract
Biomedical devices are essential healthcare applications used to treat a number of conditions when implanted in humans. However, the issue of bacterial contamination poses a significant threat on the surface of these devices owing to bacteria proliferation. The bacterial contamination can be potentially treated using antibiotics, but the formation of bacteria biofilms renders the antibiotics ineffective. As such, the use of antibacterial coatings on the implants through techniques such as electrophoretic deposition helps in eliminating bacterial biofilm formation.
Introduction
Technological advancements have made the use of biomedical devices crucial in healthcare. For instance, the devices play an important role in therapeutics, especially when implanted in humans to address a particular dysfunction. Examples of an instance where biomedical devices play an important role is dentistry, orthopedics, and urology. The materials used in making the biomedical devices are made by different materials depending on its requirements, whereby dental implants use titanium, urinary catheter uses latex, and knee and hip implants use stainless steel or titanium. The materials used in biomedical devices have their respective advantages, for instance, the use of metal and its alloys has the advantage of being resistant to corrosion as well as being strong. On the other hand, the use of polymers is based on their ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and their biocompatible nature (Andrade del Olmo et al., 2020).
