The concept of the existence of the cell was first brought to light by Robert Hooke, an English scientists in the 16th century. At this time, the existence of life was heavily based on non-scientific facts. For example it was a common notion that mice/rats originated from dirty clothes, probably because this was their favourite habitat. In the same way, maggots were beloved to originate from rotting meat. This traditional believe about the source of life, called the Spontaneous Generation was to be revolutionised by new discoveries about the cell. When fits discovered by Hooke, cells were thought to be only found in plants. Later discoveries, notably by German botanist in the 18th century.
