Food Chain Research Assignment: Grass, Rabbit, Caterpillar (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Create a diagram in which you illustrate the energy flow among organisms of a food chain in a particular ecosystem.
Include the following:
sunlight
2 producers
2 consumers
Write a 400- to 525-word summary of your diagram that includes the flowing components:
Describes the major categories of organisms, producers and consumers
Describes the interactions between organisms in your ecosystem
It has been stated that all energy comes directly or indirectly from the sun. Is this represented in your diagram?
Identify the method of energy production for the consumers and producers (photosynthesis, fermentation, or cellular respiration)
Cite sources used in APA style format.

The food chain
A food chain refers to a network of links that is linear and starts from the sun as the source of energy to the primary producers. From the primary consumers, we have the secondary consumers then tertiary consumers and lastly quaternary consumers. LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "Book1" "Sheet1!R9C9:R17C11" \a \f 4 \h \* MERGEFORMAT

In this food chain we have the sunlight as the source of energy for the primary consumers. The primary producers involves the oak tree and the grass. All the secondary consumers in the food chain include the caterpillar and the Rabbit.
In the above food chain, we have the sunlight as the source of energy. It is important to realize that producers are the most important element in a food chain since they are the source of food for the next trophic level. When we lack the producers the next trophic level will probably die due to lack of food. Producers happen to synthesize their own food and therefore, they require light to synthesize the food (Post, 2002). From the food chain, we can see that the oak tree and the grass are the primary producers since they are using the light to manufacture their food directly from the sun. The caterpillar and the Rabbit feed directly to the primary producers. The Rabbit tends to feed from the Oak tree while the Caterpillar feeds from the grass.
Energy flow comes either directly or indirectly from the sun (Emmett et al., 2005). In the diagram, we have the primary producers that receive their energy directly from the sun and manufacture their food. The oak and the grass are green plants and that make their own food from the inorganic raw materials by the use of basic energy such as the sunlight. The other organisms (rabbit and the Caterpillar) make their food from the other organisms hence using the ...
