Job satisfaction refers to the effective response regarding a particular job that is viewed either entirety or with regard to certain aspects like pay and supervision (Judge et al., 2001). The important factors that tend to affect the employee’s satisfaction include the satisfaction with pay and it is positively related to the pay level. The issue of job satisfaction has a correlation with job performance, high levels of employees’ motivation, positive work values, and lower levels of absenteeism, burnout and turnover. A person’s principle when it comes to the choice of employment tend to shape the way they view themselves, help give meaning to their life and broaden their daily life.
On the other hand, organization commitment refers to the linkage or bound of a particular individual to the organization (van den et al., 2004). The organization commitment can also refer to the relative strength that an individual identifies himself with the organization or the strength of involvement in the particular organization. The organization commitment is characterized by three important factors: willingness to exert a considerable effort on the organizations behalf, believing strongly in the organizational goals and values and the third is the strong desire of maintaining membership with the organization.
The organization commitment is the one that is strongly related to the Unilever Company. Many of the employees tend to have a strong linkage with the organization whereby they are willing to support their Company and exert enough effort on behalf of the Company. Many of the employees tend to believe more in the organizations goals and values. According to times magazine, 87 percent of the employees working with Unilever said they believe in the values of the organizations and its’ goals. 94% said that they are willing to maintain their membership with the Company. Most of them said they prefer working for the Company.
However, job satisfaction is also in application in the Unilever Company although it is not as high as the organization commitment. The pay of the Unilever Company is also important as the employees are also getting the motivation from the pay they receive from the Company.
According to Herzberg’s (2005) motivational theory, satisfaction and dissatisfaction at work tends to arise from the different factors and they are not just opposing reactions to the same factors. Herzberg was able to write a particular phrase that was critical in explaining the theory. The phrase was talking about the factors that motivate people tend to be different to and are not simply the opposite of the factors that tend to cause dissatisfaction.
