Carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids play an essential role in the functioning of the body of the human. These biomolecules are well vital components in the body. They not only aid in the up keep of the body but also plays a major function in the body metabolic activities.
Role of the carbohydrates in maintaining the structure of the cell membrane
The main roles or functions of the carbohydrates in the human body are the production of energy, macromolecules building, storage of energy, helps in the metabolism of lipids and proteins sparing. Energy production is the major role of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates give energy to all cells of the body. Glucose is the main source of energy in many cells. Cells like red blood cells are only in a position to make cellular energy by use of glucose. The brain is very sensitive to levels of blood-glucose that is low. This is because it utilizes glucose in the production of energy and its entire functioning. The energy of the glucose is found in the bonds that are chemical between the atoms of carbon. These chemical bonds are broken by the cells in our bodies and acquire the energy to carry out cellular respiration. (Patton & Thibodeau, 2015)
Carbohydrates also act as the storage of energy. This happens when the body has got enough energy to perform its functions. The glucose that is in excess is stored in the form of glycogen. A lot of this glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles. There is a rapid release of glucose stored in the form of glycogen when it is required to manufacture cellular energy. Some of the absorbed glucose is converted to deoxyribose and ribose which are vital building blocks of essential macromolecules (DNA, RNA).
