Introduction
Blue Bell creameries are a food manufacturing company based in America that engages in manufacturing ice cream. The company has its headquarters at the “Little Creamery” in Brenham, Texas. Initially, the company produced both ice cream and butter but abandoned butter production to focus on ice cream serving the entire American market. On April 20, 2015, the company issued a total recall for all of its products due to an outbreak of listeria, a bacteria that spreads through food contamination, and had already killed two victims. (CDC, 2015).
Ethical Violations
The FDA discovered that the company had failed to comply with standard procedures during production to prevent contamination of the products. This failure violated ethical standards for production, especially for food products, which requires utmost hygiene and sanitation to ensure that minimum contamination. The company also violated ethical standards by ignoring warnings of the presence of listeria cases at its broken arrow facility (Newman, 2015). The company had continuously discovered listeria contamination at the facility but did not take any action to combat the contamination or issue warnings to the public and the FDA on the same (Abrams, 2015). In addition to this, the company continued selling contaminated products despite knowing the health risk it posed to consumers. It thus violated ethical standards by placing profitability and sales before the wellbeing of the consumers. The company only acted to the contamination after two victims died from the bacterial infection, which poses serious health risks to pregnant women, newborns, individuals with low immunity, and adults above 65 years.
