Chapter 6: Reflection
Throughout my work on my dissertation proposal, I have come to learn about the importance of undertaking an objective-centered research that is based on the structure, articulated methodologies and how to address the emerging real business issues into business theory contexts. However, I still need to work on the structure of my dissertation proposal as well as the transitions between my findings.
Within the dictates of the dissertation proposal that I am carrying out, I have clearly stated the objectives and fulfilled the requirements of the proposal within the constraints of the current business challenges facing firms. I have endeavored to consistent research on the background problems that are affecting the development and growth of firms in the current competitive business environment that businesses are operating.
Although I had some predetermined perceptions that I had already formed regarding the challenges that businesses face in the 21st century, there were some inconsistencies that my predetermined assumptions had regarding the findings within certain business environments. It has helped me to appreciate the need to undertake carefully a research based on real empirical and non-empirical data that is only available when a result oriented research is undertaken. Subsequently, in light of challenges that affect the growth of business firms and the fact that it takes different forms from time to time, it depends on such factors lie inflation and legal requirements. I have come to conceptualize that these problems are dynamic, and hence there is a need to carry out a research based on current problems in current business dynamics.
Forming a balanced view of challenges affecting business entities at first hand is important component for a well-planned and executed research. Through self-interaction in the business settings I have been researching on, this has abetted me to evade continuously a situation whereby my prior knowledge of the research problem statement could affect the reliability of the findings that I derive from primary data collection. Additionally, it has cemented my knowledge that makes primary data collection important in addressing the objectives on a research activity.
Business dynamics and changing business structures have assisted me always be flexible but not feeble while doing research. In the context of the objectives and the research, methodology that I had planned to employ while out there in the field, occasionally I would drift from the theoretical mindset I had planned to employ to secure my findings. At times, the respondents could prefer a different method to answer the questions that I had requested an answer on due to time constraints. For instance, in a busy business situation, businesspeople could regularly oppose interviews because, in their view, that would be time consuming. Therefore, in such extreme cases, I would shift from interview to questionnaires methods.
Attributable to the fact that self-formed biases limit the scope to carry out a result-oriented research, through my experience during the time I was gathering facts and figures on the research, I have understood that theoretical perspectives that researcher has even before they can prove them is a weakness that I ought to circumvent. Predetermined biases are only reinforced upon proper validation on data collected from the source.
Additionally, to achieve results in any research activity that is deemed to consider originality of the data collected, there is a need to test the predetermined assumptions in an experimental environment. Measuring techniques to validate the extent of an objective ought to be the clearly analyzed. It is therefore recommended to challenge continuously the existing literature that is available in the secondary sources like books and journal addressing the subject matter.
