Steps in the development of an effective Entity Relationship Model (ERM) Diagram
An entity relationship model is graph that theoretically represents and conceptualizes the data of a business domain or the requirements for a particular process (Chen, 1976). The ERM is based on relation and set theories and therefore has the potential to achieve a high degree of data autonomy. The steps that are required to develop an effective ERM model are iterative steps, identification of business rules and requirements and giving an understanding of its operations and procedures. The ERD is created so as to identify the particular attributes associated with each entity and the primary keys. A revision and review is performed once the ERD is completed so as to help define the ERM.

It is from here then interviews with different managers would be conducted to identify the main entities, possible and plausible attributes, and also their relationships. After the designing of the initial entity models and diagrams, meetings with the operators would be done so as to define the specific data elements including the constraints, entities, and relationships.
