Electric Vehicle in Australia and its effects on smartgrids
Abstract
The ease of access of technology and acceptance of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has motivated the producers of cars to take bold steps towards electric vehicle (EV). Owing to its wide spread usage, Australia has extensive vehicle usage and ownership rates, and the inefficiency of the public transport system contributes to this (Selim, 2013). As a result, Australia has a huge potential market for EVs. Besides the merits linked to zero direct emissions, minimal reliance on oil, less costly fuel, and silent operation via smart grids, EVs provides a distinct merit referred to as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.
Through V2G technology, EVs may boost enhanced operations of the smart grids relation to reliability and storage. Based on available data and social studies, this focuses on the EV potential within Australia and assess the effect of usage of EV. Available data shows that the ever-expanding Australian population shall demand more vehicles, and embracing the EVs might benefit other aspects like, conservation of the environmental conservation, finance, and production of energy. However, there are those analysts who are skeptical of the benefits of the electric cars and the adverse effects it may have on the grid.
Introduction
The EV market within Australia is best defined as a growing market that has huge possibilities. The growing numbers of producers have introduced (or are intending to introduce) EVs into Australia in the coming future such as Mitsubishi and Nissan (Selim, 2013). Progress has been made in relation to development of EV recharging infrastructure, with good Place, Ecotality, and Charge Point within every entering into discussions with government bodies and energy network operators to establish foundations for a public recharging network for EVs with major cities in Australia. Moreover, governments with the nation have noted that there will be a need to ensure the introduction of these cars into the market in the first instance given the huge obstacles to wholesale market take-up. A case in point, the Australian Capital Territory Government is collaborating with the providers of energy liker ActewAGL and Better Place to create a network of recharging stations, which shall potentially support 1000 EVs from 2013 (Selim, 2013). The New South Wales Government has carried out trials of a plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) and linked recharging infrastructure. Despite these robust and ambitious attempts, there are still some challenges, which stand in the way of ensuring the success of the EV within the Australian market like its impact on the smartgrids. This paper will focus on why Australia should pursue the objective of ensuring that more and more people use electric cars and its benefit on the smart grid.
Electric vehicle policy in Australia
Global experiences have shown that policy is necessary in encouraging uptake of electric vehicles. In Australia, policy support for electric vehicles remains in its initial phase. Australia does not have a comprehensive electric car policy framework that limits the capacity for a coordinated national approach. Available policy differ from region to region. A case in point, the Commonwealth Government offers discount on the luxury vehicle tax, and several states and territories offer varying discounts on stamp duty and registration for electric vehicles.
